Fusion of personal & professional life, creates a happy life !

November 3, 2007

I was recently talking to someone on ‘planning success’. What  struck me was, many a times people live personal & professional life in isolation. They think, most of the things in life are not ‘my choice’ and ultimately become a victims of surroundings. What can help people overcome the ‘helpless’ attitude ?

Everything you do is an attempt to enhance the quality of your life.  Happiness is a state of mind in which our thinking is pleasant most of the time.

First think about what you think about. And if you catch yourself thinking about wrong things, “change the channel” and think about what you want to happen !

# Desire for happy relationships.

You want to love and be loved by others. You want to get along well with the people around you, and you want to earn the respect of the people you respect. Understand, you don’t “catch” depression and you don’t “catch” happiness. you “create” it by the “thoughts” you put into your mind. Carefully choose what you read, listen to, people and the work you associate with.

# Desire for interesting and challenging work.

You want to make a good living, of course, but more than that, you want to really enjoy your occupation. The very best times of your life are when you are completely absorbed in your work. And don’t wait for an invitation, start it yourself from today !

Remember, Failure is a choice made by the undisciplined. Failing to meet your objectives, regardless of what they are, is a choice, because something else has been given higher priority. If you fail, it is because you choose to fail. Success is all about long way hard-work, and there is no shortcuts.

#  Desire for financial independence.

You want to achieve a certain financial state so that you can retire in comfort and never have to be concerned about whether or not you have enough money to support your lifestyle.  If you save and invest regularly throughout your working life, you will eventually reach the point where you will never have to work again.

Life is very much a study of attention. Whatever you dwell upon and think about grows and expands in your life. The more you pay attention to your relationships, the quality and quantity of your work, your finances and your health, the better they will become and the happier you will be.

SPEED really COUNTS !

November 3, 2007

I believe that SPEED applied to many areas of life can make a significant difference in developing your character, building your self-esteem and ultimately steering your way successfully through the game of life. The best business deals as well as personal success are result of deciding quickly when the opportunity arose and closing immediately while others were still pondering. On other hand, over-analyzing, worrying and procrastination will paralyze you and keep you from acting. Being slow to react will cause you to look back with regrets for letting great deals escape your grasp. Throughout your school years, you always knew which kids finished their homework assignments on time, or finished their tests and quizzes quickly. You always knew who was quick answering questions and conscientious and quick regarding their studies. You also knew who the class clowns were who came to school unprepared. These lessons learned early, can play a great role in shaping ones attitude and lifestyle in the future. Think about it ! Another good example of how speed pays off big is displayed by the incredible success of the Apple’s i-pod, which was first to market recently with an exciting consumer product. Apple sold over 10 million i-pods in the last couple of years and currently own 65% of the market. Their competitors include heavyweights like Sony and Samsung who are five times their size in sales and are doing everything possible to catch them. Speed and first to market is usually a distinct advantage, but never one to be taken for granted. If you do so, you can move from first to last quickly. Speed in setting and accomplishing goals and objectives have also proven to be a winning strategy. Speed is recognized as a personal strength in school, sports, business and your personal life. Sluggishness or neglect is usually viewed as a personal weakness. Most people have the ability to make a choice when it comes to getting things done quickly or putting them off or even neglecting them completely. Employers know which employees are quick and conscientious and usually promote them to higher positions. These same individuals, who accomplish tasks with speed and efficiency, often do so by enlisting the assistance of others and become proficient in delegating responsibilities. They tend to work their way quickly toward positions of leadership. Speed in performance also sets a good example in your personal life. No one enjoys associating with lazy or sluggish individuals. When tasks need to be accomplished, get them done quickly. Respond to challenges quickly – be it starting work on long awaited resolutions (generally made on birthdays and new years) or get your fitness in order, or handling the day to day tasks. Get your monkeys off your back quickly.

The Power Of Energy

November 3, 2007

Last week I attended a week long Yoga & Meditation Training session with our entire company people. We learnt ad practiced ‘So Hum’ – A breathing technique for self exploration, cleansing and energy generation. Sharing with you some thoughts that striked me during and after the workout. Every healthy human being is born with a truly amazing level of energy. Your Creator gave you a unique set of energy and talents. No other individual, of the 6 billion plus that inhabit this Earth, can do what you’re capable of doing. The only question is, “Will you do it?” Sit back, and think when you experienced and displayed the unlimited physical/mental energy ? When you were constantly challenging yourself to learn new things, to try out new ideas, or to take on new obstacles ?    In the journey of life eventually many of us gets ’short-circuited’. The power is still there, but it’s blocked. It gets blocked when we start learning phrases like, “What difference does it make?” or, “I don’t feel like it,” or, “That takes too much effort,” or, “I quit.” At some point we start saying those things to ourselves in response to frustration or adversity. It’s not that we suddenly lack the unlimited energy that we were born with. What occurs is the blockage of the energy current, not a shutting down of the power plant. The challenge is getting that current to flow again. The first step in getting that current flowing again is more simply said than done, but it’s tremendously crucial: Do what you love and love what you do ! The vast majority of people do not love their jobs. They dread Monday’s and can’t wait for Friday’s. They complain about their boss and co-workers, their hours, and their wages. If you ask them why they aren’t doing what they love, they’ll give you a laundry list of reasons. Resolve : Even if theirs isn’t enough money, I’ll do it anyway. If you’re doing what you love, you’ll learn to live without a lot of money. You won’t care if it’s Monday or Friday. Everyday will be the same to you. Every hour will be the same to you. Bosses and co-workers will be easier to deal with; and the distinction between work and play will all but disappear. Developing knowledge and new skills and then honing them to proficient levels, is one of the most satisfying accomplishments in life. However, in the beginning stages of learning or acquiring skills, you must be prepared for frustration and disappointment. Like all great achievements in life, you must be willing to sacrifice time, comforts and resources to learn new skills. Then after paying your dues, you will be ready to enjoy the fruits of your labor and persistence. Enjoy the process and always strive to be the BEST you can be !

Your state of mind creates the state of your results.

November 3, 2007

Your attitude determines the state of world you live in.

Attitude creates the way you feel about goals, performance, people and situations. Your actions are a result of your attitude, which, in turn, creates a reaction from others. So, basically, what you think … you get. Incorporate a positive, joyful attitude and you’ll have positive, joyful results. Put out a bad, negative attitude and you’ve failed before you begin.

Where do negative attitude come form in first place ?

Negative attitudes come from thinking negative thoughts over and over until they have become a part of your subconscious – they’ve become habitual, a part of your personality. You may not even realize you have a negative attitude because it’s been with you for so long. Once you have a bad attitude, you expect failure and disaster. This expectation turns you into a strong magnet for failure and disaster. Then it becomes a vicious circle. You expect the worst – you get the worst.

So how we shift our thoughts and create a positive attitude ?

It takes work, but creating anything of value takes work. In order to have a new attitude we have to change our subconscious thinking. How do we do this? By analyzing every thought we have until positive thinking becomes habit. You’re merely replacing an old habit with a healthy habit, much like replacing exercise for smoking ? ….It’s certainly difficult  for those who think it’s difficult. Don’t allow your bad habits become more stronger than your will power.

Some people would say, “But negative situations are a reality. They just show up in everyday life.”

This is absolutely not true. Situations are a reality, yes. They do show up. It is your attitude that makes a situation positive or negative. Understand, that YOU are in control of how you think and feel – no one else on earth has this power unless you give it away.

Take control of your attitude, and you take control of your results.

Techniques for Turbulent Times

November 3, 2007

“Circumstances do not make the man; they merely reveal him to himself.” – Epictetus, A Greek philosopher. How true.

A crisis is the genuine test of courage and effectiveness in a leader. You can greatly improve your abilities to function in a crisis situation by thinking it through in advance and by developing contingency plans – just in case. Let’s look at how to develop the foresight that is a hallmark of effective leaders.

Think About the Worst Possible.

For example, what would you do if inflation rates doubled, as they have done in the past? What if your best-selling product, or service, suddenly stopped selling, as often happens in high-tech industries in times of rapid change. What if a key executive dies unexpectedly or your offices with all your records were destroyed by fire? What if you lost your key customer or major source of revenues?

These and other questions can only be asked and considered by the leader, the person ultimately charged with the overall responsibility for results. The failure to think through possible crises in advance can open you and others to fear, panic and confusion if something goes wrong.

Determine What Can Go Wrong.

The second technique is called the “master method” of decision making. It involves asking, “What is the worst possible thing that can go wrong in this situation?” Once you’ve asked the questions, you must decide whether or not you can live with those consequences. For example, in an investment, or new product introduction, or new promotion, the worst possible outcome may be that you will lose every penny. Can you live with that? Can the company survive? There are many different types of decisions and one of them is the decision you cannot afford to make. Most big failures result because someone made a commitment of resources without carefully considering the worst possible outcome.

Do What Billionaire’s Do.

John Paul Getty, the great oil billionaire said that one of his secrets of success was to always determine the worst thing that could happen in any investment – and then make sure it didn’t happen.

First, make a list of the three worst things that could happen to your career, your business, your department. Practice “crisis anticipation” in each key area of your life. Then develop a strategy to deal with these situations if they occur.
